If I'm reading between the lines right, "GFDL" is becoming synonymous with "Wikipedia-compatible".
Wikipedia is an open-source encyclopedia. It's radically open — anyone can edit it — and increasingly relevant. This unofficial weblog tracks its progress (and lifts quotes).

More with "free content", I think - they wanted the option of commercial reuse, which free content encompasses. Like saying "Linux" when you mean "open source". Wikipedia as the 800lb gorilla of free content.
