(Previous egypt coverage)

Jimmy Wales says:

I don't think it is a political event, except in the broad sense that Wikipedia itself is "political" in terms of being a statement that every thoughtful and kind individual has a fundamental human right to participate in the creation of knowledge...I doubt very much if this event alone will bring about any positive changes in Egypt or anywhere else. But I am certain that Wikipedia itself is already making positive changes all over the world, and this event supports Wikipedia.

A little bird told me that Jimmy's been focusing a lot more lately on Wikia (his wiki business) and less on Wikipedia. Fine. But look at all the minefields he can diffuse! His ceaseless positive vibes have guided wikipedia through many a rough passage.

You're "little bird" is right about Jimbo focussing more on Wikia than Wikipedia nowadays: when he gave his talk at Reed College last April, he explained that his emphasis would, in fact, be more on Wikia than Wikipedia -- despite the greater audience interest in the encyclopedia than in his for-profit venture.

I don't know if this is simply part of his laissez faire strategy to Wikipedia, or if he has simply grown bored with that project and has simply turned to other challenges. Or maybe -- like me, and I suspect other long-time volunteers -- he has found that spending too much time and attention to Wikipedia can be draining, and so he is distancing himself from the day-to-day of the project. After all, Wikipedia doesn't need Jimbo to revert vandalism, handle troublemakers or write Featured Articles.

I think Jimmy's an entrepreneur at heart, and he's happiest in new organizations where he can have a lot of direct impact.

Plus: I've discovered that trying to be too connected to the Online Pulse Of The World turns you into a spaz. If you want to really *think* about anything you have to get some metaphorical quiet.

Heh. A new question for aspiring Wikipedia Admins. "Since trying to be too connected to the Online Pulse Of The World turns you into a spaz, are you willing to endure your friends and family will consider you to be even weirder than you currently are? And they may seek your involuntary commitment?"
